“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep gaining what he cannot lose.” Jim Elliot wrote these words during his years at Wheaton College, a time when he prayed for God’s direction for his future as a missionary. Where would God lead this unusually dedicated and versatile man? Born into a godly family in Portland, Oregon, Jim was a dynamic speaker who had memorized literally hundreds of hymns, a Greek scholar, and a college wrestling champion. Years later that request would be fulfilled, on a beach of the Curaray River—deep in Auca Indian territory—in eastern Ecuador. But God’s plans for Jim Elliot’s extraordinary witness would not end there. The seeds of a heretofore impossible ministry had been planted.
