In many parts of the world today, experiencing suffering and tribulation for your beliefs is still a daily part of life. For most of us, this is thankfully not the case. And yet, our Lord warns us of the troubles still to come, and knowledge of the history of Christian persecution is valuable preparation. The works of John Foxe influenced generations of early Christians and, outside the Bible itself, were the most available writings of the sixteenth century. Foxe’s Christian Martyrs of the World may not be a pleasant reading experience, but it is an invaluable one.
